The American publication Reuters reported that the crypto exchange Coinbase received information that an employee of the outsourcing company was leaking data of its clients, several months before the leak was officially acknowledged.
Recall that the exchange announced that some of the personal information about users had been leaked online only in mid-May. This happened after hackers published user data on the Internet.
However, Coinbase learned of the leak back in January after an employee of Indian outsourcing company TaskUs was caught taking photos of her work computer with her personal phone.
TaskUs is an American business process outsourcing company operating in India that handled customer support for Coinbase. More than 200 of the firm’s employees were laid off in a massive layoff in January, sparking protests and drawing attention from Indian media. However, just two employees were found to be the main culprits in the hack that affected nearly 70,000 Coinbase customers.
Interestingly, this is not the first time TaskUs employees have been accused of leaking confidential information. In 2022, the company was accused of leaking Shopify and Ledger customer data.
Coinbase told Reuters it had “cut ties with involved TaskUs personnel and other overseas agents and tightened controls.”
