The Taihuttu family, better known as the «Bitcoin-family» has revised its security measures due to a growing wave of cryptocurrency-related kidnappings around the world.
Didi Taihuttu said his family has ditched hardware wallets in favor of a multi-continental approach, splitting and encrypting passwords across four separate continents.
Their hybrid security system combines digital and physical aspects: recovery phrases are engraved on fire-resistant steel plates and hidden in special locations in specific countries.
The Taihuttu family dressed up for Halloween in Thailand, where they recently moved after being given clues to their location from YouTube videos.
«We’ve become famous in a niche market, and that niche is now becoming a really big market,» Didi said. «I think we’re going to see more robberies like that. So yeah, we’re definitely not going to France.»
Back in August 2021, the head of the family said that 74% of their digital assets were stored in cold storage, distributed across different countries in hardware wallets. Now they have decided to completely abandon these devices.
As for wallets, we don’t have any hardware wallets at the moment. We don’t use them anymore.
Currently, 65% of the family’s cryptocurrency is under the radar, and they are looking at multi-party computing security to further strengthen their defenses. However, Didi mentioned that centralized exchanges still play a minimal role in their strategy, as about 80% of their trades are made through decentralized exchange (DEX) platforms.
