Paraguayan President Santiago Peña says his X social media account was hacked and used to spread a false message about the country’s transition to Bitcoin.
Strange message about what the Paraguayan authorities did Bitcoin legal tender and creating a $5 million Bitcoin reserve fund, emerged on Monday. The post, written in English, included an image in Spanish that was mistaken for an official government notice.
The government asked the public to ignore anything coming from the president’s account until further notice. Officials began talking about “unusual activity” that indicated “unauthorized access.” That same morning, the cybersecurity team in Paraguay began working with X’s security department to figure out who had broken into the system and how.
At this time, Peña has made no public statements and the fake post has been deleted. There have been no reports of arrests or other law enforcement action.
Latin America has been experiencing a wave of crypto scams this year. This isn’t Paraguay’s first brush with hackers. In May, the Ministry of Communications recorded at least 18 attacks on government agencies.
